The Otter Trail- 5 Days

Activity Description

A magnificent hike along the Garden route coast, through Cape Fynbos, along ragged coastal cliffs, pebbled beaches and indigenous forest. The beauty of the unspoiled Tsitsikamma has made this a world famous and exceptionally popular trail.

Day 1
An easy day of hiking, you’ll have an opportunity to explore the magnificent Storms River mouth before heading towards Ngubu Hut. There is a beautiful waterfall en-route, it’s a great spot to have lunch or brave the cool water and take a swim. The hut is situated on the edge of the forest and close to the ocean. Once at the hut you can relax and explore the area.
Distance 4.8km Duration approximately 2 hours

Day 2
After breakfast a climb up to Skilderkrans (a quartzite outcrop) offers magnificent views of the Tsitsikamma area. Crossing the magical Kleinbos River with it’s still water and severe rock as it flows through the forest is a midmorning highlight while lunch at Blue Bay on the beach is a fantastic treat. Up onto the ridge and the highest point on the trail with gorgeous vies and then descend into Geelhoutbos River Gorge and Scott Hut. On the forested river edge and close to the ocean this spot is a beautiful place to spend the night.
Distance 7.9km Duration approximately 4 hours (plus time for the scenic detours)

Day 3
Expect a spectacular day of hiking across the rugged rocky coastal shores through forest and across the Elands River. Towards the end of the day you’ll climb to the top of a ridge and the spectacular view over the Lottering River and out to the ocean are a treat. You’ll also be able to see the Oakhurst Huts, your destination for the evening, across the river. This is possibly the most spectacular rest camp along the trail and is renowned for dramatic seascapes and frequent visits by bodysurfing bottlenose dolphins.
Distance 7.7km Duration approximately 4 hours

Day 4
The trail follows the beautiful coastline dipping down to cross small streams including the Witels River and climbing up and out into patches of coastal fynbos and indigenous forest. Views of the ragged cliffs plunging into the azure ocean are spectacular. The Bloukrans River is large river emptying into the ocean that needs to be negotiated with care on this day. Crossing should be at low tide and your normal hiking times may be disrupted to accommodate nature. Once across there are 3km’s left to the last night’s camp at Andre Hut tucked away close to the pebble beach of the Klip River.
Distance 13.8km Duration approximately 6 hours

Day 5
A steep climb out of the Klip River Gorge and you’ll view the ocean from the fynbos ridges before your last river crossing at the Helpmekaar River. The scenery is beautiful and the Trail end at Natures Valley is spectacular. Natures Valley beach is a great spot to relax and reflect over the beauty of this area.
