Salt River via Kalander Kloof Hike

Plettenberg Bay

Activity Description

From the tranquillity of the Natures Valley Lagoon, you’ll hike up through indigenous forest where giant Outeniqua Yellow woods form a canopy over Kalander kloof gorge. The gentle slope gives way to some taxing stairs but once up those you’ll be on the escarpment where fynbos covered slopes lead up to the Tsitsikamma Mountains in the North and down to the Ocean in the South.

The trail heads towards the ocean and the beautiful Salt River, clear tea coloured water (a natural tannin stain from the forest) gurgles of white beach sand and meets turquoise waves between the densely vegetated coastal heads. It’s a surreal beauty difficult to convey.

The return leg is either through the forest or above the sea cliffs, dependant on the tide. Your hike ends at the Groot River Estuary in Natures Valley and you are welcome to swim in the lagoon or spend more time sitting on the beach or soaking up the beauty of the area.
