Cathedral Peak Climb - 2 Days

Activity Description

Fit hikers will enjoy this guided Drakensberg hike. Cathedral Peak is a free standing summit of 3005m, surrounded by the peaks and towers of the main Drakensberg escarpment. The hike starts in the beautiful Mhlambonja Wilderness area climbing over 1500m to the summit. The path is steep and in sections there are 360 degree views as you walk over knife edge ridges on the way up into the spectacular mountains.

Day 1
We meet at the Cathedral Peak hotel reception at 14h00 and then begin our hike into the quiet magnificence of the Drakensberg Mountains. The path winds through the lower berg, along the Mhlambonja River through Montane forest and grasslands, up to Sherman’s Cave, our campsite for the night. This is a short hiking day, approximately 2 hours but expect to burn off some energy as the path gains 500m of altitude, bringing us closer to the towering Drakensberg escarpment. Relax and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery while we prepare dinner. Climb from 1 400m to 1 900m

Day 2
The sunrise over the mountains is a beautiful sight from the cave, the perfect setting for that first cup of morning mountain coffee. An early start is necessary to tackle the challenging ridge that leads up to Orange Peel Gap, the gateway to Cathedral Peak. The Bell, The Horns, Mhlambonja Buttress and Cathedral Peak become clearer and more beautiful as you climb closer.

The trail becomes more challenging after Orange Peel gap, there is a short chain ladder, knife edge ridges and serious scrambling (D grade scrambling) where your guide will put up fixed ropes as hand rails for your safety. The summit is a respectable 3005m and rewards you with spectacular 360 degree views over the Drakensberg escarpment and little berg. Total ascent time about 4 hours 1 900m to 3005m

Depending on the weather and timing, lunch is normally enjoyed just below the summit, before the descent is started. It takes approximately 4hrs back to Cathedral Peak Hotel, expect to reach the base at around 16h30.
