Thabana Ntlenyana Via Mkomazi Pass - 4 Days

Activity Description

A scenic 4 day, 3 night Circular Trek in the Southern Drakensberg onto the Lesotho Highland Escarpment and up to the summit of the highest point in the Southern Africa: Thabana Ntlenyana which stands 3482m on the Lesotho side of the Drakensberg. Meals are provided and prepared for you and you’ll be camping in the Drakensberg wilderness each night.

Day 1
Meet the Lemon Tree Coffee Shop in Underberg at 08h00 and then follow your guide through to the Vergelegen Trail head. We may need to transfer in a 4×4 depending on the condition of the road. Gear up, sign mountain register and start the trek up Nhlangeni Pass. The start of the trek is at 1500m and by the time you’ve climbed to the top of the pass on day 2 you will reach a respectable 3200m. Great views over the Mkomazi wilderness area, Vergelegen and of course the great Drakensberg escarpment. First night’s camp is set up along the pass near one of the fresh water streams.

Day 2
After breakfast, the top of Nhlangeni Pass is the goal for the day. It’s demanding hiking but once the top of the pass is reached you’ll have spectacular views of the escarpment cliffs and the valleys far below. Camping that night is on the escarpment at an altitude of around 2 900m

Day 3
The hike to the Summit of Thabana Ntlnyana at 3482m is relatively easy walking in comparison to the achievements of the past two days and the highest spot South of Kilimanjaro is the highlight of this days walk. You’ll be able to relax a little on the summit of Thabana Ntlenyana with it’s commanding views of the Drakensberg escarpment and the Lesotho Highlands, a great reward for all the effort. You’ll start your return hike which is via the scenic 21km Mkomazi Pass . The third night’s camp is spent along the Mkomazi Pass.

Day 4
After breakfast the descent of the Drakenberg escarpment continues along Mkomazi Pass, Vergelegen should be reached mid afternoon
