Thabana Ntlenyan Via Sani Pass - 2 Days


Activity Description

A scenic 2 day, 1 night Circular Trek in the Southern Drakensberg and the Lesotho Highland Escarpment incorporating the summit of the highest point in Southern Africa (Lesotho): Thabana Ntlenyana stands 3482m on the Lesotho side of the Drakensberg.

Day 1
Meet in Underberg at 08h00 travel up the daunting Sani Pass by 4×4 gaining an awesome 1300m over 22km. Pass through the South Africa border post and enter the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

Leaving the Sani Pass area GoVertical will guide you out along the Sani River contouring around the ridges and onto the Manaung River. We ascend to ka-Ntuba Pass along the Drakensberg escarpment and follow a scenic route to Nhlangeni pass where we’ll set up camp, with views down dramatic cliffs and over the spectacular Mkhomazi Wilderness area. Distance; approximately 16km Altitude gain about 400m.

Day 2
After breakfast there is a further 500m of altitude to ascend to gain the highest point in Southern Africa, Thabana Ntlenyana. 3482m with it’s commanding views of the Drakensberg escarpment and the Lesotho Highlands. We return on a path that takes us across the Sehonghong and Mangaung Rivers back to Sani Pass and South Africa’s highest Pub for lunch (optional)! Distance approximately 16km. Descend Sani pass by 4×4 arriving in Underberg in the late afternoon.

We would like to ensure its suitability. • Sleeping bag sub-zero -8 recommended (it can get cold even in summer) ** Available for hire see below • Sleeping mat – foam or Thermarest - We include foam rubber mats • Waterproof outer shell • Light weight waterproof rain pants • Hiking boots & socks ESSENTIALS • Water bottle 1 – 1.5 liters • Changes of clothing- layering is best with a good fleece for warmth • Gloves • Beanie/ Balaclava • Towel • Sun block • Sun glasses • Sun hat/ Cap • Toiletries (eco friendly) • Toilet paper • Torch + batteries, preferably headlamp OPTIONAL • Personal first aid eg plasters, deep heat, headache tablets, medication etc • Personal Energy sweets and drinks • Hiking staff • Camera AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL • 3 season 2 person mountaineering tents (2.3 kg) • Sleeping bag(-8 C, 1,4kg) with liner • Foam sleeping Mats • Backpack NOTES • Please remember to leave space in your Back pack for the cooking gear, food, utensils and 1st Aid, which will be shared between the group members. • You can expect to carry up to 15 kg in your back pack including your personal gear. • Please ask GoVertical Mountaineering if you are unsure about any items on this list
