Double Summit Adventure - 3 Days

Activity Description

A combination of hiking and climbing to conquer the two highest peaks in the Northern Drakensberg – Mont-Aux-Sources and the Sentinel!

The spectacular Amphitheatre in the UKhahlamba World Heritage site, towers above Natal at 3000m above sea level. The Drakensberg escarpment’s steep walls, great valleys and pinnacles face roughly east and the Lesotho Highlands fill the horizon to the West. From the edge of the Drakensberg, there are spectacular views of the Amphitheatre, the Sentinel & the Tugela falls disappearing into the vast valleys below. If luck is with us, we will be able to see the endangered Bearded Vulture, Jackal buzzards, Mountain Rhebuck and perhaps some baboons. This sensitive and pristine wilderness area is an absolute must in the Drakensberg.

Day 1
Meet at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge so that we can transfer to the trail head by 4×4. Leaving the Sentinel car park/ trail head, we hike up to the Mont-Aux-Sources-Plateau, climbing the famous chain ladders to get there. We set up camp along the bank of the Elands River, relax and prepare dinner with awesome views over the Maluti Mountains.
Distance is 8 km approximately 4 hours altitude gain of about 450m to the Escarpment which is about 3100m, these distances and times are approximate and once at camp there are multiple options to take pack off hikes to enjoy the views.

Day 2
We climb (Non technical) to the highest point on the Northern Drakensberg Escarpment, Mont-Aux-Sources 3282m with its commanding views of the amphitheatre and plateau below, weather and time permitting, we’ll explore the Crow’s nest area as well. Camp is set up along the banks of the Tugela River with outstanding views of the Amphitheater, The Sentinel and Tugela Valley.
Distance is 12 km 6 hours highest point 3282m and camp is on the escarpment at about 3100m

Day 3
After breakfast on the Plateau, we hike to the foot of the Sentinel, an imposing free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg. Standing a proud 3159m above sea level, it poses a great challenge!
We start off with a scramble up steep grass covered scree slopes. Once we reach the base of the climbing pitches, we refresh your memory or teach you all you need to know about the rope work and safety techniques you’ll use during your climb. Ascending the two pitches is great as they are quite different from one another, allowing climbers to experience different techniques of climbing.
Reaching the summit is a triumph that affords an exhilarating view of the Northern Drakensberg escarpment, the Tugela falls and the Amphitheater. After abseiling back down the rock face, we stop for a hiker’s lunch before heading back towards the car park. Depart from car park in the afternoon back to the lodge
Distance is 8 km 5+ hours. Highest point – Sentinel Peak 3159m
