Sports Climbing Course

Activity Description

The most straight forward type of climbing is on bolted routes. Sport climbing is a popular sport in its own right and can be a rewarding challenge, excellent training or a sound stepping stone for traditional climbing. We will use one of the popular bolted climbing sites such as Strubens Valley in Roodepoort where there is an abundance of climbs at different levels. You will also get advice on the correct type of equipment to purchase, have an opportunity to try out different equipment and you will be able to try out more difficult climbs.

We will revise:
• Relevant rope skills
• Belaying techniques
• Equipment usage
You will learn:
• How to lead a sport climb
• How to safely tie off at the top of the climb
• How to belay a lead climber
• How to arrest a fall
• Rope management
• How to read a route description
• How to use and care for equipment for sport climbing

We recommend you have the following equipment:
• Climbing shoes
• Harness
• Belay device
• Climbing helmet

If you don’t have the above gear we can provide the harness, helmet and belay device, you can use normal trainers, but it is much easier to climb with climbing shoes. We do not provide climbing shoes – for health reasons!

At the end of this course you will be able to climb on any Sport Crags safely and independently
