Maltese Cross & Sneeuberg - 2 Days

Activity Description

The Cederberg Mountain range is dramatic. The rock is burnt orange, the wind carved stone formations such as the Wolfberg Arch and Maltese cross are colossal and the eco system with endemic fynbos (wild flowers) with unusual animals such as the Bat Eared Fox and Aardwolf have all contributed to its status as a Unesco World Heritage site. Humans have lived in and marvelled at this magnificent area for centuries, the Khoi san Rock art dates back between 300 and 6000 years. From ascending the stark mountain tops to plunging into cold clear rivers, hiking in the Cederberg is a unique experience.

Day 1
We meet at the Grapevine Coffee Shop in Citrusdal at 8am and then follow your guide through to the trail head. The Maltese Cross is our first highlight in the Cederberg. The hike starts with a gentle incline up Klipbok Kloof and then across onto a fynbos rich plateau. There are typical wind-carved Cederberg rock formations along the route. The unmistakable Maltese Cross is a 15 meter high pillar of rock standing upright in the stark Cederberg wilderness with the Sneeuberg mountains as a backdrop. At the foot of the Sneeuberg we’ll pitch our tents and then explore the area. If time allows we can climb 600 metres up to Sneeuberg peak at 2027m it’s the highest in the Cederberg. After enjoying the breathtaking views we descend to camp to enjoy an evening under the famously clear Cederberg skies.
Distance is 12 km 6 hours highest point 2027m and camp is on the escarpment at about 1400m

Day 2
An early start gets us up onto the saddle between Sneeuberg Peak and The Pup ( Klein Sneeuberg Peak ) where there are grand views over the Western Cederberg towards Citrusdal. We contour towards Sugarloaf Peak along a shale band with hiking between the massive Apollo Peak and the Pups Snout. If time allows we can hike around the Sugarloaf Peak and then head down the Klipbok kloof back to the vehicle in the late afternoon. This hike offers magnificent views over the Kromriver valley and South towards the dramatic Kromriver Ridge.
Distance is 12 km 6 hours highest point 1460m
