Cederberg Explore Hike, Chalets - 3 Days

Activity Description

The Cederberg Mountain range is dramatic. The rock is burnt orange, the wind carved stone formations such as the Wolfberg Arch and Maltese cross are colossal and the eco system with endemic fynbos (wild flowers) with unusual animals such as the Bat Eared Fox and Aardwolf have all contributed to its status as a Unesco World Heritage site. Humans have lived in and marvelled at this magnificent area for centuries, the Khoi san Rock art dates back between 300 and 6000 years. From ascending the stark mountain tops to plunging into cold clear rivers, hiking in the Cederberg is a unique experience. Accommodation is spent in one of the National Parks chalets. All meals are provided and prepared by your guide.

We will meet at the Grapevine Coffee Shop in Citrusdal and then follow your guide through to base camp to offload your kit.
The Maltese Cross is out first highlight in the Cederberg. The hike starts with a gentle incline up Klipbok Kloof and then across onto a fynbos rich plateau. There are typical wind-carved Cederberg rock formations along the route. The unmistakable Maltese Cross. The Cross is a 15 meter high pillar of rock standing upright in the stark Cederberg wilderness. We will enjoy a hiker’s lunch before we head back and head towards our camp and you can enjoy the afternoon swimming in the Maalgat river pools.
Maltese Cross Hike 7km, 4 hours

An early morning start we hike up to the spectacular Cederberg Cracks where you spend at least an hour exploring the strange rock features and then eventually climbing out on top to a vista of fantastic views over the Cederberg. We continue up to the massive Cederberg Arch towering over the rocky platue surrounded by the strange and typical rock formations. The Cederberg Leopard prints are usually spotted but it’s a real treat to see one darting amongst the rocks if you are lucky while we are having lunch. In the late afternoon we head back to camp.
